openSUSE is one of the easiest to use and laptop/tablet friendly distribution.
Linux as much evolved, and in nowadays versions, almost everything works out-of-the box. Still there some tricks that you might do in order to have a better tablet experience.
First, before the installation, when booting the installing media, press F3 at the GRUB screen and select the good resolution: 1400x1050. This will save you from a lot of work in polishing latter.
After the install is done, activate the updates and NVIDIA repository from Yast2 (For the latter, in "Software Repositories" Press Add, then select "Community Repositories and then NVIDIA). Make a complete update. This should automatically install the nvidia driver and other things that miss.
Configuring the Tablet
The driver is installed, just needs to be configured. Enter in Yast2 -> Hardware -> Graphic Card & Monitor. Select Tablet in the left column.
Select "Activate this Tablet" and then "TABLET PC" in the left list and "Toshiba Tecra M..." from the righ.
In the "Port and Mode" tab (up) you have to select "COM-5 [/dev/ttyS4]"
(this also works for other toshiba tablets and solves the inactive tablet problem)
In the last tab, check the boxes for pen and eraser.
In order to activate the rotate function, you have to edit the "/etc/X11/xorg.conf" file.
In the Section "Device" section add the following line:
Option "RandRRotation" "On"
Then log out and log in again.
The Bluetooth problem
Theproblem is with activating the device. You need a program named toshset. Unfortunately, you can't find him working for openSUSE, so normaly you have to compile it. It also involves some hacks and patch-applying. It used to work, but with the latest kernels it doesn't. Here are some resources:http://en.opensuse.org/Upgrading_Toshiba_ACPI_to_support_bluetooth/fnfx/toshsethttp://en.opensuse.org/Bluetooth_on_Toshiba_Tecra_A8_opensuse_11http://www.flurble.org/computers/toshset.pl
Tips and Other
KDE4has a nice function for selecting files (a little +, so you don't need to press "SHIFT" or "ALT"), nice for the pen-working.
There are some nice programs for the TabletPC: Xournal, Jarnal, Cellwriter. Don't hesitate to use the web interface for easy-install:
software.opensuse.org/search
(I suggest to press the one-click-install button from dkukawka, this will automatically add this repository that is very tablet-orienteted.
If you have any problems, leave a comment. Enjoy!
